Professional Indemnity Insurance

If you choose to take out Full membership, then you will enjoy the benefits of both Professional Indemnity insurance and Legal Defence Costs insurance. The PI insurance provided by PDA provides a standard limit of £5,000,000 worth of cover per incident per year.

This is specifically designed to provide members with:

• The cost of legal representation
• Associated costs, e.g medical reports, expert witness statements, toxicology reports, chemical analysis, conferences with leading counsel, expenses, etc.
• The payment of any compensation awards made against the member in respect of:
  • Committing an act of negligence, error or omission
  • Providing wrongful advice
  • Breaching confidentiality
  • Committing libel or slander

Any of which results in bodily or mental injury, sickness, disease or death - this is called medical malpractice.

Examples where medical malpractice can occur include:

• Errors or omissions in prescription interpretation, wrong dosage, strength or form given.
• Dispensing, labelling, delivery, dilution, formulation, preparation.
• Counterprescribing, the running of clinics, advising patients and other healthcare personnel.
• Providing consultancy services to GP practices, hospices and others.

The list is not exhaustive

Cover is also extended to any Good Samaritan acts, e.g. offering First Aid assistance at a motor accident or performing resuscitation on a member of the public.

Choose a P.I. scheme relevant to your particular type of activity

Owing to the very wide range of activities undertaken by pharmacists, the risk profiles will be different and this will be reflected in the insurance premium for PI insurance that is paid. PDA currently operates eight different schemes for pharmacists , each of which will cover a particular set of activities by providing a different level of cover. Pharmacists wishing to establish the insurance scheme most relevant to them or PDA members wishing to see if any new activity will require them to move to a new level are invited to use the policy wizard.
