Primary Care Pharmacist Scheme (PDAC)

What is covered

Many of the new roles now being developed by pharmacists are being undertaken in new settings, away from the traditional community or hospital pharmacy. These 'new roles' carry with them a significantly higher level of risk, particularly if the work is undertaken in a GP's surgery, involves running a clinic, supervising the work of others (e.g. Pharmaceutical Advisers) or writing Patient Group Directions (PDG's). The Primary Care Pharmacist scheme (PDAC) will provide medical malpractice cover especially for this purpose. Applicants are required to show evidence of the processes that they propose to use and any special training that they have undertaken.

This scheme is one of the most comprehensive schemes available to PDA members. It builds upon the foundation of cover provided by the PDAL self employed locum scheme in that it provides cover for all activities as long as the activity is one that would be deemed to be an acceptable one by the Law and Ethics Committee of the RPSGB.

This Primary Care Pharmacy (PDAC) scheme provides cover whether the pharmacist is working in Community or Hospital pharmacy, a GP surgery a hospice, clinic or any other appropriate venue. It provides protection whether the work is undertaken in an employed or self employed capacity.

It provides cover for involvement in either writing a Patient Group Directive (PGD) or supplying medicines under a PGD.

Additional protection

Protection is also provided for :
