What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the month that the Qur’an (the Islamic holy book) was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. It is considered a holy month, lasting 30 days, where Muslims should fast between sunrise and sunset. This includes abstaining from all food and drink, including water. During the day, Muslims are expected to act with forgiveness, charity, self-examination, and prayers. The end of Ramadan is celebrated by Eid-ul-Fitr, a festival that consists of Muslims ending their fasting, giving gifts, and praying.
For more information about Ramadan, the PDA BAME Network has compiled a factsheet with some basic information about Ramadan, and some tips for those who will be fasting.
Sima Hassan, President of PDA BAME Network said, “Many pharmacy colleagues and patients will be observing the holy month of Ramadan from this week. I hope this factsheet will help to raise awareness of what fasting in this month means to Muslims and how we can support our colleagues and patients who will be fasting.”
