From 2026, pharmacists registering for the first time will enter professional practice at a time of significant change, with most newly qualified pharmacists joining the register as independent prescribers. This enhanced scope of practice brings greater responsibility, accountability and professional risk.
In addition, the number of existing pharmacists who are gaining an IP qualification continues to increase
The PDA’s Independent Prescriber (IP) Resource Hub has been developed to support pharmacists as they transition into practice as autonomous practitioners and prescribers. It aims to build the confidence, professional judgement, and practical skills needed to practise safely, effectively and sustainably throughout the initial years of being a prescriber.
Through a structured collection of guidance, tools, learning resources and professional support materials, the IP Hub helps pharmacists strengthen their decision making, manage professional risk, work within their competence, and access appropriate support when needed. In doing so, it promotes confidence, consistency and defensible professional practice.
The IP Hub is not a clinical training programme. Instead, it focuses on the professional judgement, legal awareness, risk management and workplace skills that underpin safe and sustainable practice. It complements existing education and supervision by helping pharmacists build resilience, strengthen professional integrity and develop sustainable careers
The Five Pillars of Practice
The PDA’s Members Hub is organised around five pillars that reflect the realities of modern professional practice.
Together, they provide a practical framework to support pharmacists as they transition into autonomous practice and independent prescribing, helping them navigate the responsibilities, challenges and opportunities of their evolving professional roles.

Exploring the resources
Resources within the IP Hub are organised using the Five Pillars framework, making it easier for pharmacists to find support that reflects the realities of pharmacy practice.
Within each pillar, pharmacists can access a range of resources including:
- Guidance documents
- Practical tools and templates
- Professional advice resources
- Case studies and examples
- Learning materials and recorded content
- Articles and reflective resources
Whether seeking support with professional accountability, risk management, workplace challenges or long-term career development, the IP Hub is designed to help you quickly locate relevant, practical information and support.
PDA IP Hub – a resource library designed to support independent prescribers
The IP resource library brings together knowledge, guidance and practical support into a single place. It has been developed to help newly registered pharmacists build confidence, strengthen professional judgement and establish safe, sustainable prescribing practice during the early years of their career.
An overview of the Five Pillars of Practice is shown below. Please note that not all topics will be covered within the IP Hub itself; some may be addressed through PDA’s wider education resources and activities, including structured online learning and PDA workshop events.
