Navigating the future: The crucial role of ethics and governance of AI integration in pharmacy

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve, community pharmacist and Chair of PDA’s Southeast Regional Committee, Nav Bhogal explores AI’s role in pharmacy. Nav also questions how AI can be governed and used ethically when dealing with patient safety and trust.

In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, the integration of AI has become a powerful force, promising transformative solutions and an elevated standard of patient care. I find myself immersed in this dynamic shift, particularly within the realm of pharmacy, where AI technologies are reshaping how medications are dispensed, treatments are personalised, and patient outcomes are optimised. The potential is awe-inspiring, but amidst the excitement, a crucial realisation has dawned, the pivotal role of robust ethics and governance in this unfolding narrative.

At the core of this transformative journey, there should be an unwavering commitment to the highest ethical standards. As a pharmacist, what responsibilities do you foresee? Does safeguarding patient welfare, ensuring equitable AI use, and upholding transparency and accountability principles feature at the top of your list?

In this evolving landscape, how important is patient trust? Patients, accustomed to the compassionate care provided by pharmacists will now find themselves navigating a terrain where algorithms and data analytics are integral. Transparency becomes the linchpin, providing patients with a glimpse into the revolutionary world of AI applications. How can we ensure that patients remain at the core of care, their rights are protected, and their trust in both healthcare professionals and AI technologies is upheld?

Privacy is a cornerstone of medical ethics. It takes on heightened importance in the AI-driven pharmacy. Harnessing the power of AI to analyse vast datasets for treatment recommendations necessitates an unyielding commitment to data privacy and security. Patients entrust sensitive health information to pharmacists. How can we ensure that this information is handled with the utmost care, shielded against unauthorised access, and used exclusively for the betterment of patient care and not commercial or rogue interests?

Informed consent emerges as a guiding principle in this ethical AI integration narrative. Patients have the right to understand how AI influences their treatment plans, what data is utilised, and what potential risks and benefits may arise. As an ethical pharmacist, you become a channel for information, engaging patients in meaningful discussions, empowering them to make informed decisions, and fostering a collaborative partnership that transcends the traditional healthcare provider-recipient dynamic.

On a broader scale, ethics and governance play a pivotal role in ensuring the equitable deployment of AI across diverse patient populations. Vigilance is required to address biases embedded in AI algorithms, mitigating disparities, and actively working toward an inclusive and just healthcare landscape. Currently, there are no established structures to address health inequalities among diverse patient populations. In your perspective, do you think that, at this critical moment in this stage of AI development, addressing bias should be an ethical priority forming the foundational principles of AI development in health?

As AI continues its pervasive evolution within pharmacy practice, ethical considerations and governance frameworks become the compass guiding this transformative journey. The PDA, recognising this imperative, stands as a guardian of ethical standards, advocating for governance structures that protect patient interests, upholding professional integrity, and steering the pharmacy profession toward a future where AI is a tool to support positive change in patient outcomes and healthcare delivery.

In the complex fabric of healthcare, where ethics and governance are intricately woven together, we must ask how can AI in pharmacy emerge as a portrait of responsible innovation, patient empowerment, and a steadfast commitment to the enduring values that define the noble profession of pharmacy.
