Those who attended the event were able to hear from four panel speakers. These speakers were, Sidney Boahen, locum community pharmacist, Sade Abiola, hospital pharmacist, Ayisat Gbajabiamila, senior consultant and clinical pharmacist, and Tia White, community pharmacist.
The panellists discussed the theme for Black History Month 2024 which was ‘reclaiming narratives’ and how it’s time to take control of black stories, celebrate black heritage, and ensure black voices are heard! Members heard about the panellist’s experiences within pharmacy and were given the opportunity to share their experiences and any questions they had.
The event also allowed for attendees to participate in open discussions. Topics members covered included experiences of racism at work, the importance of reclaiming their heritage, and being themselves at work. Despite how challenging it can be for black pharmacists in pharmacy, the event highlighted some powerful ways in which the black community have been able to make a change. Following these discussions, some PDA resources were mentioned that members can benefit from including the PDA BAME Network’s Anti-Racist Pharmacy Toolkit.
An anonymous PDA member said, “I enjoyed it and would definitely attend a BAME Network event again.”
