The PDA believes the shortfall in community pharmacy funding in England must be resolved. The current arrangements have led to a severe workforce crisis which is a significant reason why so many pharmacists are leaving the sector. It is, therefore, unsurprising that the NPA, as the representative of independent community pharmacy owners in the UK, is launching a second day of action on 19 September 2024. This day of action aims to continue raising awareness of the funding crisis with the newly elected members of parliament, devolved nation politicians, and the new government.
In line with the guidance agreed with the PDA, the NPA has again agreed the following:
- The NPA has guided its members in ensuring that patient safety is not reduced during the symbolic dimming of lights between 9 am and 12 pm.
- Recognise that the authority of the responsible pharmacist must be considered, and this advice will be provided to respective members.
- The NPA has guided its members and clarified that this campaign will not detrimentally impact the contractual arrangements, such as working hours for any employee or locum pharmacists.
- At its members’ events, the NPA has communicated to its members what can and shouldn’t be done as part of the campaign.
On the day, pharmacy staff will participate in activities coordinated by the NPA, which can be seen by clicking here. The NPA will also lead a delegation to deliver the cross-sector #SaveOurPharmacies petition to the government, which has gathered 330,000 signatures from members of the public in participating community pharmacies.
