International Workers Memorial Day (IWMD), on 28 April annually, gives the opportunity to highlight the preventable causes of most workplace incidents and ill health. It promotes campaigns, the union organisations and others that fight for improvements in workplace safety. It is respected throughout the world and is officially recognised by the UK government.
The slogan for the commemoration is “Remember the dead, fight for the living”, and across the UK, attendees at IWMD events, including civic leaders and trade union members, remembered those who have lost their lives at work, alongside those who have suffered injury, illness or disease through their employment. Those attending reiterated their commitment to prevent more work-related deaths & injuries in future.
A minute’s silence was observed by those in attendance at each event and wreaths were laid. PDA officials laid wreaths at events in Milton Keynes, and in Dundee, where an event was part of the Scottish Trades Unions Congress (STUC).
Wellbeing and safety at work are critical aspects of any pharmacist’s life, and the PDA has a proud history of challenging unsafe workplaces, and issues impacting wellbeing, to improve conditions at work for pharmacists across the UK
PDA members who are at all concerned about health and safety practices in their workplace can contact the PDA Member Support Centre.
