Consultation and petition on proposal to introduce prescription charges for 60-65 year olds in England

The Westminster government is consulting on increasing the age at which individuals qualify for free prescriptions from 60 to 66 years old. The PDA will be responding to the consultation and are also sharing a petition against the proposal.

Tue 6th July 2021 The PDA

The PDA is encouraging members to express their views about the UK government proposal to introduce prescription charges for 60-65 year-olds in England.

The PDA is a four-nation organisation and members in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland practice in health systems without prescription charges. A PDA member survey in 2020 showed prescription charges in England regularly prevent patients from receiving their medicines.

The PDA is part of the Prescription Charges Coalition, a group of 49 organisations calling on the Westminster Government to scrap prescription charges for people with long-term medical conditions in England.

However, rather than reducing the proportion of the population that must pay for prescription charges in England, the UK government is consulting on increasing the age before individuals qualify for free prescriptions from 60 to 66 years old, thus increasing the number of patients who would have to pay.

The PDA will be responding to this consultation and PDA members are invited to submit their thoughts for consideration as part of that response by emailing policy@the-pda.org. All pharmacists in England are also encouraged to respond to the consultation direct.

In addition, the prescription charges coalition is promoting a petition to keep prescriptions free for over the 60s. If you wish to support the coalition’s attempts to prevent the proposed change you can sign and share the petition.
