Mary Gwillim-David was a remarkable woman who made a lasting impression on everyone she met. Mary was known for her warmth of personality, her enthusiasm, and for wearing ‘high heel’ shoes no matter the occasion.
She was a member of NAWP for over 50 years and active on NAWP’s Executive Committee from 1989 – 2012. During her time on the Executive Committee, she held the positions of Honorary Secretary (1990 – 1992), President (1992 – 1994) and Social Secretary (2008 – 2010). During her Presidency she organised the Annual NAWP Conference in 1993 in her home city of Swansea, in conjunction with the Wales Centre for Pharmacy Professional Education (WCPPE). The subject that year was ‘Pain and Substance Misuse.’
Mary was always very welcoming and supportive towards any new members of NAWP. She had a wonderful way of putting people at ease. Her natural rapport with people made her an instant success with our European colleagues at the various European Women Pharmacists’ Meetings. Wherever Mary was, there would be a group of enthusiastic followers.
Away from NAWP, Mary was a community pharmacist and owned two busy pharmacies in Swansea and was one of the first in the area to have a pharmacy that focused on substance misuse. Mary served for a number of years on the Welsh Executive of the RPS. Mary’s connections with the corporate world made her ideally placed to get support for some of the national NAWP gatherings. Mary was also a member of Soroptimist International and served a term as President of the Swansea Branch.
Mary will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
