PDA welcome GPhC statement concerning vaccination volumes and safety

In September the PDA published concerns about undue pressure being placed on pharmacists to deliver high volumes of flu vaccinations. We welcome the statement from the GPhC on 22 October which addresses the concerns raised by PDA members and reiterates the required behavior of pharmacy owners.

The PDA have been advising and supporting members who have been facing an unreasonable volume of vaccinations and we have been raising our members’ concerns as appropriate.  We welcome the GPhC statement.

The GPhC statement includes that:

“…Some concerns have been raised with us that pharmacy professionals are sometimes being put under pressure to carry out more flu vaccinations than they believe can be administered safely, while also safely delivering the other services provided by that pharmacy.

We recognise that in challenging circumstances, pharmacy professionals may need to use their own professional judgement in a particular situation to depart from established procedures in order to care for patients and people using health and social care services. We do, however, expect pharmacy owners and pharmacy professionals to continue to meet our standards and guidance at all times. This will help make sure that all pharmacy services are provided to patients and the public safely and effectively…”

Pharmacists should continue to exercise their full duties as a responsible pharmacist for the safe operation of a pharmacy, ensuring vaccinations and all other activity are being undertaken safely.

For individual advice and support, PDA members concerned this issue can contact our service centre and if you know a pharmacist who is not yet a member of the PDA please encourage them to join us
