About NAWP

The National Association of Women Pharmacists (NAWP) is an organisation within the profession in the UK that concerns itself with issues of special relevance to female pharmacists.

About us

NAWP was founded in London on 15 June 1905 and has a proud history of supporting women pharmacists. From 1 January 2020, NAWP began a new chapter as a network of the Pharmacists’ Defence Association.

NAWP provides a structure through which members can work together to proactively address and campaign around gender discrimination and its causes and consequences.

In line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, NAWP also works to empower women, as this helps to expand economic growth, promote social development and establish more stable and just societies. Read more.

The Equality Act 2010 provides protections from discrimination at work that relates to sex.

NAWP’s mission

To enable all women pharmacists to realise their full potential and raise their profile by being educationally, socially and politically active.

What we do together

The NAWP network is made up of members like you, supported by PDA staff. We can share our advice and experience, along with information from other organisations, and it is the actions of members that will contribute towards a gender-equal world.  We will:

  • Examine women’s healthcare and gender-related issues
  • Contribute to debate within the profession and healthcare sector
  • Raise awareness of issues impacting on female pharmacists
  • Provide networking opportunities
  • Represent pharmacy amongst women’s organisations
  • Help female pharmacists to achieve equality in their workplace
  • Campaign together on issues which are important to the network
  • Create opportunities for CPD and skills sharing
  • Celebrate the success of female pharmacists and pharmacy students
  • Grow the network and our influence

Our interests

These broadly fall into one of two areas:

  • Career-linked issues related to gender equality
  • Gender-linked aspects of pharmaceutical care

NAWP has active links with many organisations. We meet with women pharmacists in many EU countries, liaise with women’s policy-forming groups in the UK, and participate in consultation exercises affecting pharmacy in the UK.

Benefits of membership

As well as the ability to support and engage in the work of the network, NAWP members also have access to a number of other benefits, including:

  • PDA and NAWP Publications
  • PDA and NAWP Training & Education (at member rates)
  • PDA and NAWP Conferences (at member rates)
  • PDA Plus benefits (discounts and special offers)

Membership eligibility

Membership is open to all UK pharmacists and former pharmacists (e.g. retired or taking a career break) and all UK pharmacy graduates, regardless of age, race, gender, sexual identity, disability, nationality, hours worked or employment status. Pharmacists do not need to identify as women in order to join the network: we welcome allies – people who will support equality and fairness for women pharmacists.

How to join

From 1 January 2020, NAWP will be accepting new membership applications. You do not need to be a member of the PDA to be a member of NAWP, though PDA members do benefit from a discounted membership fee.

PDA members can join the NAWP for £10 per year, Retired members for £20 per year and non-PDA members for £30 per year. In accordance with PDA’s support for future pharmacists, NAWP membership is FREE for PDA student and trainee members (PDA student and trainee membership is also FREE).
