Health, Safety and Welfare training

PDA Representatives from around the UK met last month for a two-day face-to-face Health, Safety and Welfare training programme.

Health, safety and welfare is embedded into the work of every PDA Rep. The recent PDA Reps’ Health, Safety and Welfare training programme focused not just on the skills and knowledge needed to be a confident rep, but also on the links between these and the GPhC standards. Employed and locum reps discussed how to deal with common hazards found in pharmacies, what an employer’s duties are, and how to raise such issues with an employer.

Some of the reps in attendance were new to their roles, while others were more experienced. Through group work and class discussions, reps supported each other in their learning. Feedback included new reps feeling more confident and wanting to have greater involvement with the PDA through member and rep networks.

PDA Student Reps left the course understanding what a difference health, safety and welfare can make to a pharmacy setting, particularly in relation to staff and patient safety. They also learned how to raise concerns if they see things going wrong (GPhC standard 8).

Alveena Hareem, PDA Rep said, “Still smiling after two days of working together with a wonderful group of people and knowledgeable tutors! I learned so much and enjoyed myself at the same time! Thank you.”

Anne Davies, Community Pharmacist, PDA Wales and West England Regional Rep, NEC member, and PDA Rep in Boots said, “I learned so much regarding health, safety and welfare in the workplace that now feel empowered to take this learning back to my workplace and help to improve the working environment for members.”

Becci Patman, PDA Rep said, “Excellent course. Very informative and the enthusiastic tutors make the subject accessible and useful.”
