At this year’s Pharmacy Show, the PDA will lead two sessions examining these important developments. Through discussions on AI accountability and meaningful allyship, the sessions will explore some of the most pressing issues currently affecting pharmacy professionals and their practice.
AI in Pharmacy: Who is really accountable?
As AI becomes increasingly embedded within pharmacy systems, workflows and patient interactions, pharmacists are being asked to navigate new professional and ethical challenges. While AI can support practice and improve efficiency, it does not remove the pharmacist’s responsibility to exercise professional judgement and make safe decisions.
This session, presented by Professor Mark DasGupta, Director of Professional Development at the PDA, will take place in the Technology & Digital Health Theatre on Sunday 11 October from 10.30 am to 11.00 am.
It will explore the PDA’s developing work on AI in pharmacy practice, examining concepts such as Professional-in-the-Loop (PITL), visibility of system behaviour, accountability, automation bias and the growing gap between professional responsibility and system control.
Using practical examples, including patient-facing AI, decision-support systems, documentation tools and automation within PMR systems, attendees will gain valuable insights into how AI can be used safely while maintaining professional accountability.
Action through allyship
Later that day, from 5.15 pm to 5.45 pm in the Leadership, Workforce & Careers Theatre, the PDA will host Action through allyship, a panel discussion chaired by Paul Day, Director of Membership & Communities at the PDA.
The session will explore what meaningful allyship looks like in practice and why it matters. Drawing on PDA casework and the experiences of pharmacists, panellists will discuss the impact that the absence of allyship can have on workplace experiences and outcomes.
The discussion will also highlight initiatives led by the PDA’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Networks, demonstrating how collective action and collaboration can help drive positive change across the profession.
