What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition characterised by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory, and mood issues. Symptoms can vary in severity and may come and go or be persistent. Anyone can be affected by fibromyalgia however, the condition affects around 7 times as many women as men.
Due to non-specific symptoms, fibromyalgia is sometimes mistaken for other conditions and might only be diagnosed many years after the onset of the first symptoms. Estimates suggest nearly 1 in 20 people may be affected by fibromyalgia to some degree.
The PDA NAWP Network acknowledges that the condition affects predominantly women and wants to play a role in raising awareness, providing pharmacists affected by this condition with support. They also want to increase the understanding of pharmacists who are involved in the care of patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia.
