Pharmacists should be aware that it is not just their patients that experience the menopause, it is an issue in the workplace too.
As around 50% of the world’s population consists of women, even if you will not experience the menopause yourself, you will have female colleagues who will do so at some point in their lives.
Almost 8 out of 10 menopausal women are in employment, and studies have demonstrated that menopause symptoms can have a significant impact on attendance and performance at work, which means that it is not just a female issue, but an organisational issue. Employers have a duty to ensure that conditions in the workplace do not make the symptoms worse under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
To coincide with World Menopause Day 2020, the National Association of Women Pharmacists (NAWP) have produced a factsheet about menopause at work. The theme for World Menopause Day 2020 is Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI), which is premature menopause with loss of ovarian function taking place before the age of 40.
