• NHS pay award England, Wales, and Northern Ireland fails to address the cost of living crisis

  For pharmacists, the NHS pay award falls below even the headline increase of 4.5%. Paul Moloney, PDA Union National Officer looks at the pay award announced on 18 July which applies to PDA members working in the NHS in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The Scottish government had previously announced a proposed 5% increase in Scotland. 

• PDA responds to announcement of significant job reductions at NHS England

  The chief executive of NHS England has announced that the organisation is expected to be between 30-40% smaller than the current combined size of NHS England, Health Education England and NHS Digital as the three organisation merge by the end of 2023/24. This means 6-8,000 job losses. 

• Scottish government offer NHS Scotland employees 5% pay increase

  This week (15 June) members employed on Agenda for Change terms and conditions in the NHS in Scotland, along with all NHS Scotland employees have been offered a pay increase of 5%. Covering all 160,000 employees working in the NHS in Scotland, this will now be considered by unions representing the NHS Scotland workforce.  

• NHS announces new guidelines for flexible working requests

  Those working in the NHS and employed under Agenda for Change terms and conditions now have stronger rights regarding requesting flexible working. This is the result of a joint statement issued by NHS Employers and the trade unions representing NHS staff.

  Keep Our NHS Public (KONP) is the sister organisation to ‘Health Campaigns Together’ and is a non-party-political organisation campaigning against the privatisation and underfunding of the NHS. 

• The ending of emergency provisions around flexibility to provide NHS pharmaceutical services

  It has been confirmed that temporary flexibilities in the provision of NHS pharmaceutical services introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic in England will end on 31 March 2022. 

• Planned breaches of NHS contract damage pharmacy

  The PDA are highlighting concerns of pharmacists about what appear to be deliberate breaches of the NHS contract by some community pharmacy businesses. These breaches have the potential to cause harm to patients and to damage the reputation of the profession.  

• Government announces outcome of NHS pensions consultation

  The government has announced the outcome of the NHS pensions consultation and has set a date for contribution increase as part of a package of changes.  

• PDA supports the NHS to encourage young people to get their booster

  Pharmacists have been on the front line during the pandemic working alongside trainee pharmacists and pharmacy students. The pharmacists' role in the healthcare sector has been key to the success of the vaccination campaign thus far by reassuring hesitant patients and administering first, second and booster vaccines. 

• PDA responds to the DHSC consultation on the NHS Pension Scheme

  The scheme was launched in October 2021 and proposes to include basing members’ contribution rates on actual annual salaries and reducing the cross-subsidy between higher and lower earners.
