Many members working in the NHS have been raising concerns with the PDA regarding stress and pressure at work and the impact on their well-being.

Liz Larkin, PDA Organiser, spoke about the work the PDA has been doing nationally to lobby on behalf of members and raise the issue of pressure and stress at work. Liz also spoke on how by working together members can achieve improved working conditions.

Clare Hirst, PDA Organiser, outlined the employer’s responsibilities in terms of their legal duty of care for employee’s wellbeing and managing exposure to stress and how members can raise concerns about workplace stress. Clare explained that pharmacists are entitled to ask for a stress risk assessment and the employer is obliged to share the findings with them. PDA members were encouraged to use the resources developed by the PDA as part of the It’s Time to Address Stress campaign.

Finally, Jyoti Saini, a PDA Rep in an ICB and a PDA Regional Committee member, reminded members on how they can alleviate some stress through wellbeing and lifestyle tips. This included diet, exercise and sleep routines.

Liz Larkin said, “We know that our members work in stressful environments in hospitals and are often challenged by workload, staffing shortages, and excessive demands. Our message is that by working together with other members, members can negotiate meaningful changes to their working environments.”

Iain Dawson, PDA member and hospital pharmacist in North Wales said, “I attended this webinar recently. I would highly recommend this for all hospital pharmacists especially as stress in the workplace is unfortunately all to visible.

The speakers were knowledgeable and supportive delivering useful presentations and providing excellent resources as well time for interactive discussion and debate. Thank you.”
