As many members will already be aware, the PDA joined the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) in October 2022. One of the main reasons behind this was to build upon the successful Medicines to Ukraine campaign and work with FIP so as to develop an international pharmacy-led humanitarian charity programme, one that could respond to emerging crises in any part of the world.
As a FIP Council member, the PDA is already working with FIP to lay the initial foundations for this important piece of work.
As a result of this publicly stated PDA strategy, since the earthquake in Syria and Turkey, the PDA has received donations from members and also some pharmacy businesses so that these can be used in a pharmacy-led campaign in the earthquake zone.
FIP international humanitarian foundation
FIP CEO, Catherine Duggan said, “In response to requests from the pharmacy students and early-career pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists in Syria and Turkey, FIP is immediately working to assist with the emergency responders’ efforts and ongoing needs.”
As a first step towards durable longer-term arrangements and to give FIP members across the world a practical way to support pharmacy-led humanitarian charitable response, FIP has established an initial foundation mechanism. This is enabling member organisations like the PDA and also individual pharmacists and pharmacy businesses to make donations confidently and securely.
£10,000 support provided through the PDA
Building upon the contributions from members and with an added contribution from the PDA, a sum of £10,000 has been paid into the FIP foundation which will be used to assist emergency responders in the earthquake zone. Those PDA members wishing to support a pharmacist-led humanitarian effort to help the victims of the earthquake in Syria and Turkey are encouraged to make their contributions to the FIP foundation.
