PDA submits written evidence to the Built Environment Committee Inquiry

The PDA recently provided written evidence to the House of Lords Built Environment Committee Inquiry concerning ‘High streets in towns and small cities’.

Tue 21st May 2024 The PDA

The evidence was submitted specifically to draw attention to the importance of community pharmacies as an essential component of sustainable and vibrant high streets.

The Built Environment Committee Inquiry accepted and published 58 written submissions in their call for evidence. This included the evidence submitted by the PDA which is the only published evidence from any UK wide pharmacy organisation. The PDA’s evidence highlighted the importance of the pharmacy network during the Covid-19 pandemic and how pharmacy could now play its part in the post Covid-19 recovery plan as detailed in the PDA’s post Covid-19 report.

The PDA has been actively bringing to the attention of policy makers and legislators the impact that pharmacists can have on public health, especially the evidence of the impact from the Covid-19 vaccination programme provided from community pharmacies. This is of course based on the public being able to access pharmacists in settings such as sustainable and vibrant high streets.

Drawing on a number of referenced reports, the PDA brought to the attention of the inquiry the importance of community pharmacy and how the public consistently rated access to a community pharmacist as a top requirement in their high street and neighbourhood. The PDA’s submission also noted the success of certain diagnostic centres in high street locations and the importance of accessible primary healthcare provision in high streets.
