The STUC Disabled Workers’ Conference brings together disabled trade unionists from a range of unions and sectors to discuss, debate, and consider what matters to the lives of disabled workers and trade unionists. It also provides a platform to build on and share organising and campaigning skills and experience through a variety of engaging workshops and special sessions.
The conference is one of five of the STUC Equality Conferences that take place annually. In addition to motion debates and discussion, the conference will consist of a wide range of workshops, panel sessions, guest speakers, and networking opportunities for disabled workers throughout the Scottish trade union movement.
As delegates, PDA Rep, Susan MacKinnon and PDA Scotland Head of Policy, Maurice Hickey will have opportunities to participate in debates and discussions, speak on motions on the PDA’s behalf, vote on motions and elections, and stand for the STUC Disabled Workers’ Committee for the year ahead. Both of the PDA’s delegates are also members of the PDA Ability Network which concerns itself with issues of special relevance to disabled pharmacists within the UK.
Maurice said, “The 20th annual STUC Disabled Worker’s Conference takes place in Clydebank this year and is something to celebrate. However, there is still far too much to be done to promote the rights of disabled workers, and the focus this year is on future-proofing accessibility and support.
Sadly, in 2023, many disabled workers still fall foul of outdated and stereotypical cultural attitudes at the hands of work colleagues and managers, so I am proud to represent the PDA at the conference and give voice to the members of the PDA’s Ability Network. It is always good to learn from the experiences and campaigns of others who have to fight the same battles as disabled pharmacists, and together through the STUC Scotland’s disabled workers are demanding better.”
