As part of the revalidation process, pharmacists are required to submit four Continuous Professional Development (CPD) records, one peer discussion and one reflective account. In addition, at least one of the six records submitted must reflect on any annotation or specialist role held by the pharmacist.
This requirement recognises the importance of maintaining competence, knowledge, and professional judgement in specialist areas of practice. It also provides an opportunity for pharmacists to demonstrate how they have developed, applied, and maintained specialist expertise within their individual scope of practice.
The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) has published additional advice and examples to support pharmacists working in specialist or leadership roles to reflect meaningfully on their responsibilities, practice, and continued development. For Independent Prescribers (IPs), at least one revalidation record should demonstrate how prescribing skills are developed and maintained and how they remain fit to practise in relation to their prescribing annotation.
The PDA has long emphasised the importance of pharmacists defining and working within their scope of practice. Revalidation provides an important opportunity to demonstrate how knowledge, skills, and experience are developed, applied, and maintained in practice, supporting safe and effective pharmaceutical care across the full range of professional roles and responsibilities.
PDA members seeking ideas for CPD, reflection and professional development can access the PDA Member Hub, which brings together professional guidance, learning resources and practical toolkits. Current collections include dedicated resources for pharmacist independent prescribers and early-career pharmacists, providing practical support for professional development, career progression and working confidently within an evolving scope of practice.
For full details of the revalidation requirements, pharmacists should refer to the GPhC’s revalidation and renewal information, revalidation resources and FAQs.
