The pharmacy profession can only thrive if strong leaders are steering its course. Leadership can be inherited or learned, nonetheless, every good leader possesses identifiable qualities that must be nurtured at the early stages of their career.

Mark Koziol, Chairman of the PDA, says: “All pharmacy students are hugely absorbed in their extensive, and often, very challenging, studies. Despite that, some involve themselves in additional activities that demonstrate, that not only do they have a passion for their profession but that they are also becoming leaders in their own right.”

Cheryl Smyth, PDA Union Regional Official (Scotland), says: “This is an excellent opportunity for a pharmacy student to stand out from the rest and be recognised and rewarded for their leadership qualities. It is a chance for students to establish themselves within the profession. I encourage pharmacy students in Scotland to have confidence in their abilities and achievements and apply for this award.”

The 2019 winner of the Student Leadership Award, Erin Gilmour, adds: “The awards were a lovely night for me last year and I feel it would have been even if I hadn’t won, it was great to see so many senior members of the profession and hear about the different projects taking place across the country.”

The PDA believes such qualities must be championed and celebrated at undergraduate level. We are pleased to be an active participant in these awards and encourage all those eligible for this award to consider applying.

The judging panel, made up of respected members of the pharmacy profession will select a maximum of five finalists based on the entries submitted. They may then liaise with the finalists before selecting the overall winner.

This year’s judging panel includes:

Professor Robin Plevin, Head of Institute, Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences

Alima Batchelor, Head of Policy, The Pharmacists’ Defence Association

Once nominated, the candidates will be emailed an information form to complete. Early nomination affords the candidate a longer time to complete the information form. The closing date for nomination is Monday 7th September 2020.

The closing date for nominees’ completed entries is Monday 21st September 2020. Contact Bridget McCabe on or telephone 02890 999 441. Entries must be accompanied by a digital photograph, at least 500KB for printing quality.
