Since 2003, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has commemorated World Day for Safety and Health at Work. This year, the day will focus on ‘safe and healthy working environments’, as this will be the first year the ILO has included safe and healthy working environments as a fundamental principle and right at work.
One of the PDA’s many priorities is to support members who have experienced inadequate work environments, which impacts pharmacists’ mental and physical health. To help the PDA address these issues, the PDA annually conducts a survey based on its Safer Pharmacies Charter, which is designed to ensure safe practice. To see the results of the most recent survey, click here.
The PDA works year-round to ensure that members are safe and healthy at work. Recently, the PDA has produced an ‘It’s time to stay safe at work’ factsheet, which advises pharmacists on employers’ responsibilities, what to do after an accident, and how to reduce the risk of accidents.
The PDA believes that mental health at work is also incredibly important. This is why the PDA regularly holds online courses for members to provide help and advice on dealing with poor mental health, and has published a factsheet to help pharmacists cope with stress. Furthermore, the PDA donated over £200,000 to its charity partners, Pharmacist Support, and encourages pharmacists who are struggling with their mental health to contact them.
To get involved in World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the PDA encourages members to consider becoming a PDA Health and Safety Rep. Health and safety reps work hard to prevent illness and injury in the workplace. Contact the PDA today to discuss becoming one or click here.
