Bullying in the workplace can either be a one-off incident, or a persistent pattern of offensive, intimidating, humiliating behaviour. This behaviour attempts to undermine an individual or group of employees.
Over the past 12 months, the PDA has surveyed members across hospital and community sectors using the HSE Stress and Wellbeing survey. Over 2,250 pharmacists responded, and the PDA is still using the information gathered to ensure our actions make a difference to the working lives of pharmacists.
Bullying and harassment in the workplace were issues raised by hundreds of pharmacists who responded. Over 20% of respondents said they’d experienced bullying and nearly 40% said they’d experienced personal harassment in the form of unkind words or behaviour.
Many employees are unaware of the employer’s duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of their employees and other people who might be affected by their business, including locums. This includes taking actions to remove the risk of bullying in the workplace and protect them from all forms of harassment.
The PDA strives to ensure the actions we take to improve the working lives of our members are informed by the pharmacists we protect. The PDA is pleased to announce that they are launching a toolkit which will allow pharmacists to better understand their rights at work in relation to bullying and harassment, and to empower them to take steps to improve working conditions.
This PDA event will launch the new PDA toolkit, which includes a bullying fact sheet and bullying and harassment incident diary. The PDA will examine the key areas of employment law around bullying and harassment, the steps that should be taken if bullying and harassment is taking place at work, and the support which is available for PDA members.
