NAWP Spotlight will be a way to focus on important topics that mainly affect women and offer some support to women who are experiencing the same issues. It also supports women to open up about how they’re feeling, showing them that they’re not alone.
This NAWP Spotlight ‘Menopause Matters’ aims to help break the stigma around menopause and encourages employers to help women thrive at work. While the majority of women experience menopause in their lifetime, it is still a taboo subject for many. World Menopause Day, led by the International Menopause Society, aims to help tackle the stigma.
Menopause occurs when women stop menstruating for 12 months, due to reduced oestrogen levels. It usually happens around the age of 50, but the lead-up, known as perimenopause, can take up to 15 years. Everyone experiences menopause differently, but symptoms often include memory loss, hot flushes, and headaches. Menopause can also have an impact on cardiovascular health, which is why the theme for World Menopause Day 2023 is cardiovascular disease.
According to Nuffield Health Research, 13 million women in the UK are either peri- or post-menopausal, yet approximately two-thirds of women say there is a general lack of support and understanding. To help improve this, the PDA NAWP Network encourages pharmacists to download the below documents and share them with colleagues.
