Initial findings from the disability discrimination survey carried out by the PDA Ability Network showed that:
- 40% of respondents had felt that they had been excluded from the workforce, underemployed or unemployed due to their disability
- Almost 70% of respondents had not had reasonable adjustments or had only received partial reasonable adjustments to accommodate their disability
- 53% of respondents had said that they had been subject to discrimination at work
- Of those who experienced discrimination, 60% said that they had been subject to discrimination from their manager and 40% said they had experienced discrimination from colleagues.
Share your experience of disability discrimination in the workplace
The PDA Ability Network wants to ensure that they have captured the experiences of all PDA members with a disability working in pharmacy. The network will use this evidence to inform its next campaign that will work to ensure employers meet their obligations under the Equality Act 2010. PDA members are encouraged to complete this online survey (which can be completed anonymously) by Tuesday 30 April 2024.
Liz Larkin, PDA Organiser and Co-ordinator for the PDA Ability Network, said “Pharmacists are a talented skilled workforce but a proportion of pharmacists who have disabilities or long-term health conditions are discriminated against and excluded from the workforce. This is a terrible loss of skills and talent and we need employers to create an environment where disabled members can work safely and without fear of discrimination.”
