The PDA is affiliated with the STUC and recently PDA members Hammad and Megan were delighted to get involved with the STUC Youth Conference. They represented the PDA and young pharmacists to the gathered delegates from across the STUC’s affiliated trade unions. Both will be embarking on their foundation training year as trainee pharmacists from August 2022.
After the conference, Megan said, “This being my first conference and trade union representation I found the weekend conference an invaluable experience to not only discuss the motions being presented and carried but also to learn more about trade union history and the current movement. After graduating with my MPharm from Strathclyde this month, I felt I was able to add to conversations considering the needs of new young workers coming into the pharmacy sector, especially after Covid-19 and as a young female entering the industry. I would like to thank the PDA for allowing me to represent them at their first STUC youth conference and for the ability to meet lots of like-minded young individuals from across many trade unions.”
Hammad said, “The STUC Youth Conference was a great learning opportunity and crash course in politics, unionism, and campaigning. Several different unions within Scotland were represented by their delegates and they were all driven, passionate, and inspired young people who really wanted to see a change in their profession and trade union.
I was delighted to represent the PDA at the STUC Youth Conference where I took part in stimulating discussions about sexual harassment, climate change, and the current cost of living crisis. It was a fantastic crash course in campaigning, politics, and current issues and made me reflect on my own workplace and how I can improve the working practices to allow for better staff fulfillment. It was fantastic knowing exactly how taking part in these discussions would make a difference in people’s lives and set the agenda for the STUC work plan for the year. Everyone was keen to know about the achievements of the PDA and I believe the PDA has officially made a mark in actively helping the STUC youth committee with their agenda over the next year. I am proud to have been a part of this experience and I am proud to have represented the PDA.”
The STUC was pleased to have the PDA’s two young members involved and contributing to the conference. The PDA hopes to be able to send more young members to represent the PDA at future conferences.
