PDA LGBT+ Network has a presence at Manchester Pride for the first time

The PDA was delighted to have a presence at Manchester Pride this year for the first time.

Members and supporters of the PDA LGBT+ Network joined in the Manchester Pride Parade, which took place over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Scott Rutherford, President of the LGBT+ Network said, “An in-person event has been long overdue, and celebrating at Manchester Pride was worth the wait. Representing LGBT+ pharmacists, trainees, and pharmacy students in the parade was a really special moment.”

Soh Xi Ken, Honorary Secretary of the LGBT+ Network said, “It was so lovely to see unapologetic queer, joyous expression during Pride, with key messages being communicated across to remind us to keep fighting (trans rights are human rights, U = U, etc), and in remembrance of those who came before us.”

Cathryn Brown, Lecturer in Pharmacy Practice at UCLan and Community Pharmacy Locum said, “It was just an amazing day, the people of Manchester came out in force to celebrate the parade. It made me reflect on how far we have come in such a short time; having grown up in the shadow of Section 28, it’s just incredible. I’d love for more people to join us next year – being cheered and applauded like we were makes you feel brilliant.”

Representatives from Pharmacist Support, the profession’s independent charity, also joined the PDA LGBT+ Network in the Parade. Kate Westbrook, Marketing and Communications Manager at Pharmacist Support said, “The team at Pharmacist Support were proud to be able to celebrate out on the streets of Manchester with our friends from the PDA LGBT+ Network and to represent our pharmacy family up and down the country. We had such a fantastic day and look forward to this becoming an annual event in the pharmacy calendar!”
