PDA Reps join in activities during Young Workers Month

November is Young Workers Month, which each year provides an opportunity for union reps, activists and campaigners to reach out and inform young workers about trade unions.

Wed 11th November 2020 The PDA

Organised by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the aim of Young Workers Month is to ensure that there are sufficient opportunities for young people (those under 27 years of age) to join a union, to get involved and play an active role in shaping the trade union movement and their careers.

The 2020 theme for Young Workers Month is mental health. The TUC has a series of digital events for young people and PDA reps to get involved in this month. There is also a TUC Education Workbook to support reps on Mental Health & The Workplace (learn more).

Young Workers Month is a chance for PDA Reps to promote membership and share how the PDA supports students and young people in the workplace and campaigns on the key issues that members care about most.

This year, the PDA has launched exciting new rep roles for student, pre-reg and prov-reg reps which bring opportunities to network with other members from around the UK during online meetings, through virtual networks, events and the new PDA Education Hub programmes.

On the 24 November, as part of our Young Workers Month activities, the PDA will launch our first online reps training programme for student and pre-reg reps, helping them to learn more about trade unions, the PDA and to develop rep, communication and leadership skills. This course will help them to become effective reps and support their career progression through the development of transferable skills. Never has the PDA support and opportunities for student, pre-reg and prov-reg members been stronger than during the COVID-19 pandemic. The PDA is supporting members on issues such as remote learning, wellbeing, provisional registration, bank working, health & safety, the assessment process and developing new training programmes on the PDA Education Hub.

“I’m pleased to have joined the PDA Executive to represent the views of student, pre-reg and provisionally registered members and to make sure your concerns are heard and shared with the relevant stakeholders. I encourage all students and pre-regs to join the PDA and take advantage of free membership,”  said Jasraj Matharu, PDA Provisionally Registered Rep and Executive Member.

“Being a PDA student rep gives you a taste of a leadership role before you start your pharmacy career. It also provides the opportunity to raise issues affecting your study and training and to receive advice and support to address them with the members you represent. From my experience during my pre-reg training, it’s worth joining the PDA and getting involved. The Education Hub has been a fantastic resource and it’s free to join as a student or pre-reg,”  said Samuel Opoku, PDA Pre-reg Rep.

The PDA has a long history of supporting the mental health and well-being of all pharmacists, including student and pre-reg members, through their partnership and donations to Pharmacist Support – a charity that provides help to pharmacists and their families.

Over the next few weeks, the PDA will also be promoting Pharmacist Support resources to support members on issues that can impact their mental health, such as anxiety, stress, working relationships and sleep (see related links below). The PDA has also published a well-being factsheet in collaboration with Pharmacist Support: Managing Your Well-Being in the Workplace.

Joining the PDA

Pharmacy students, pre-regs and pharmacists are encouraged to join the PDA and become part of the only trade union exclusively for pharmacists in the UK. Membership is FREE for students and pre-regs with a special offer of £99 available for those provisionally registered.

There has never been a better time to join the PDA and get involved. We encourage you to ask pharmacy students, pre-regs and your pharmacist colleagues to Join the PDA and share our PDA joining materials.
