Gordon Appelbe

Qualifications: LLB, PhD, MSc, FRPharmS

Gordon Appelbe Gordon is a specialist in pharmacy law and ethics and RPSGB regulatory and inspectorate matters. He has been involved in drafting pharmacy legislation in six countries and currently provides advice to the Medicines Control Agency. As an advisor to the Pharmacy Insurance Agency since 1993 , he has an extensive experience of advising pharmacists who are subject to an RPSGB or police investigation

Qualified in 1956 and worked in community pharmacy for 9 years. Joined the staff of the RPSGB in 1965 as an inspector and then as a secretary to the Statutory Committee in 1971. Appointed Head of Law Department in 1978. A legally qualified pharmacist, he is the co-author of Dale and Appelbes Pharmacy Law and Ethics. He is a former RPSGB council member and treasurer of the RPSGB. Lecturer and author of over 80 articles. Currently the secretary of the Pharmacy Law and Ethics Association.

Elizabeth Doran

Qualifications: MRPharmS

Elizabeth was the president of the British Pharmaceutical Students' Association for 2003-2004.

She qualified in 2003, and since then has worked in two large teaching hospitals, including two years as a 'resident' pharmacist.

John Farwell

Qualifications: F.R.Pharm.S

John has undertaken work assignments for many NHS trusts as an independent pharmaceutical consultant. Before this, he has been, among other posts, chief pharmacist for several hospitals.

Richard Flynn

Qualifications: MR Pharm.S

Encouraging best practice in relation to pharmacists and the issues that they face. Coaching and development. Motivating and encouraging others. All aspects of store management. Facilitating employee/employer communication. Employment best practice.

1969: Qualified as a pharmacist then worked as a relief pharmacist. 1971 - 1998: Manager for various branches of major commercial pharmacy multiple. 1998: Appointed as Commercial Manager for major commercial multiple. 1999 - 2002: Worked as Professional Development Manager for major commercial. since 2002: Working part-time as a commercial manager and consultant pharmacist. Elected member of the Community Pharmacy Group.

Robert Gartside

Qualifications: BSc (Pharmacology), FRPharmS, Diploma in Network Analysis

Bob worked in research in the pharmaceutical industry, then built a community pharmacy group on Merseyside before moving to North Wales. Secretary of the Local Pharmaceutical Society since 1980. Elected member (past Chair) of the Welsh Executive, Royal Pharmaceutical Society since 1990. Member of numerous Welsh government working parties. Special interest in Repeat Dispensing and Medicines Management.

Outside of pharmacy Bob is Vice-Chairman of Caernarvon and Anglesey motor club which runs the International Rally of Wales and a past Board member of the Welsh Highland Railway Society, responsible for obtaining a £4.3m millennium grant for the railway rebuilding.

Duncan Jenkins

Qualifications: MSc PhD MRPharmS

Duncan Jenkins Commissions community pharmacy based services such as smoking cessation and emergency contraception provision. Development, implementation,and evaluation of medicines management systems, drug administration errors and prescribing measures. Expert sitting on the Medicines Management Services Collaborative panel and is Public Relations Officer for the Primary Care Pharmacists Association.

His background is in clinical pharmacy and has worked at some of the country's top teaching hospitals, including Southampton General, St George's and the Hammersmith. He has an MSc in clinical pharmacy and has experience in the management of clinical pharmacy services and in prescribing audit. His PhD is in the Health Technology Assessment of a hospital based drug distribution system. More recently he has gained 5 years experience as a health authority pharmaceutical advisor and has gained a reputation for being innovative and visionary in his approach. He chaired an area prescribing committee for several years and has been responsible for the implementation of a new product assessment process for both primary and secondary care. He currently works as a specialist in pharmaceutical public health for a public heatlh network which spans 2 PCTs as well as being Managing Director of MORPh Consultancy. Duncan is currently a member of the PDA Advisory Board

John Jolley

Qualifications: FRPharm.S , FIQA.

Corporate governance, Has Institute of Directors certificate in Corporate Direction, requiring skills in assessing compliance with Guidelines for directors including elements of employment legislation. Personnel management responsible for implimenting performance improvements amongst large numbers employees. Audit, qualified with the Institute of Quality Assurance to undertake corporate audits on companies quality management systems and to conduct technical due diligence assessments. Registered eligible as a Qualified person and for a number of years have been the RPSGB assessor for persons seeking registration. Clinical Governance, have carried out audits of dispensing systems and evaluated error reporting in a number of Community Pharmacies. Medication reviews trained to carry out clinical reviews of elderly in line with National Services Framework.

Registered with RPSGB in 1968 and worked for most of his career with Boots, Beechams and Boehringer Ingelheim. Work experience includes Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Quality Assurance (Registered as QP), Manufacturing and General Management. Worked for two years in management consultancy introducing performance improvement techniques and effecting change in to large organisations For the last three years he has worked in Community Pharmacy and in Medicines management for Southern Norfolk PCT, specialising in clinical reviews of the elderly. He has held office with in the RPSGB and various trade associations

Diane Langleben

Qualifications: M.R.Pharm.S

Diane spent 15 years working as a hospital pharmacist before switching direction and becoming editor of Hospital Pharmacy. She now works as a freelance writer on pharmaceutical matters and is editor of the PDA's Insight magazine for hospital pharmacists

Alan Nathan

Qualifications: FRPharmS

Pharmacy law and ethics. Continuing professional development. Stress management. Pre-registration training and registration examination.

1964 - 66: Lecturer in Pharmacognosy, Sunderland School of Pharmacy. 1966 - 72: Employee community pharmacist. 1972 - 86: Proprietor community pharmacist. 1986 - 89: Locum community pharmacist. 1986 - 2002: Member of Council, Royal Pharmaceutical Society. 1989 - 94: Lecturer / Practitioner, King's College London and Boots. 1994 - present: Lecturer in Commuity Pharmacy Practice, King's College, London.

Shenaz Patel

Retail pharmacy for large multiples / supermarkets / independents, both at operational and management level. Recruitment, training and development, disciplinary and some employment law at operational level, coaching and development centres. Contract acquisitions and TUPE. Working with management of all levels.

Mark Provost

Mark Provost Information Technology

Mark has extensive experience of pharmacy and pharmacy computer issues. He was the owner of a pharmacy in the 80s and then became a primary software developer for Hadley Hutt Computing Ltd, subsequently becoming Technical Director. After Hadley Hutt was purchased by National Data Corporation in the late 90's Mark left to lead the IT team at PPLS International and The Pharmacy Insurance Agency (PIA). Mark has been involved in many of the PDA pre-launch focus group meetings and has been primarily responsible for the PDA website www.the-pda.org which is designed to provide much of the support that is currently lacking for employee and locum pharmacists.

Graham Southall-Edwards

Qualifications: MA (law), LLM., B.Pharm., MRPharm.S

Graham Southall-Edwards Experienced Pharmacist with 35 years experience in Pharmacy (started at 15) plus last 20 as a locum in GB and last 10 years as Pharmacist in Germany and recently Austria too. Familiar with all areas of problems encountered by locum pharmacists. Speak fluent German, as well as considerable French, some Italien and Swedish. Extensively travelled in EU. As a Barrister-at-Law, very wide experience of highly contentious 'tort' and contract Court battles, particularly those where one party has much 'corporate pride' to protect or enhance and is prepared to pay what it costs to get its own way, regardless of what the law says. Particular speciality areas are law of contract (including employment), Tort (including negligence), EU law, Company Law, Credit & Insolvency. Considerable experience and expertise in advising Pharmacists facing criminal (Police and other) / Satutory Committee enquiries.

Qualfied in 1975 at Bradford University; did pre-reg training at Leeds General Infirmary. Progressed to Pharmacy Management at Savory & Moore, Leiston after training at Bond Street and JB&C for 2 months. Moved to George Staples Ltd, Stoke-on-Trent in 1977 and held position as director / superintendent until 1983. Started own locum business in 1982; combined this with other varied (non-pharmaceutical) commercial interests. Worked as expert in medical / pharmaceutical negligence and other cases in 1980s, then progressed to study for Masters Degree in Law / the Bar in early 1990s. Qualfied for the Bar of England and Wales in 1998 at UWE. Member of Lincolns Inn since 1994. Now running specialist Pharmacy / law business.

Paul Taylor

Qualifications: LLB (hons)

Pharmacy, Corporate Fraud, Regulatory & Serious Complex Crime. Partner and Head of Business Crime & Regulatory Unit of Pinone & Partners

Paul is the Lawyer who acted in the Peppermint Water gross negligence manslaughter case securing an acquittal; advising in many subsequent gross negligence manslaughter investigations throughout the country in a pharmacy, nursing home, registered mental nursing home and hospital context; representing pharmacists in disciplinary proceedings before the Statutory Committee of the RPSGB. Acted in investigations/prosecutions concerning controlled drugs/Medicines Act offences and poisons cases.

Joy Wingfield

Qualifications: FRPharmF, LLM, MPhil, FCPP

Application of law and ethics to pharmacy practice, particularly community pharmacy. Operation of disciplinary and enforcement processes at RPSGB. Risk management and resolution of ethical dilemmas.

Qualified as a pharmacist in 1971; five years in community pharmacy. Inspector for the Pharmaceutical Society from 1976 - 1986; obtained postgraduate diploma in agricultural and veterinary pharmacy. Head of the Ethics at RPSGB 1986 - 1991. Obtained MPhil in European law and LLM in law and medical practice. Appointed Assistant Pharmacy Superintendent for Boots, being responsible for risk management across the company's 1000 plus UK pharmacies. In 2000 appointed to chair at Nottingham Pharmacy School, on permanent secondment from Boots. Joint author of Dale and Appelbe's Pharmacy Law and Ethics and Practical Exercises in Pharmacy Law and Ethics.

Virginia Wykes

Qualifications: MRPharm.S

Virginia registered as a pharmacist in 1981 and spent the first few years of her career working in community and hospital pharmacy. In 1985 she moved into teaching and taught science A levels and the BTEC national certificate for pharmacy technicians. During this time she gained a Certificate in Education. In 1989 she became the RPSGB's first Education Officer for preregistration training and spent several years running and developing the RPSGB's preregistration training scheme and the registration examination. In 1997 her role at the Society widened to a broader remit to include other aspects of pharmacists' training and development such as CPD. During her time at the RPSGB Virginia undertook a postgraduate diploma in Training & Development, and became a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development. In 2002 Virginia left the RPSGB to work free-lance on projects related to the education and development of pharmacists and other healthcare professionals.
