Responses received to pharmacists’ questions on professional leadership commission

The recent government backed survey on professional leadership resulted in PDA members seeking clarification about its intentions. We put these to the Chief Pharmacist for England and the Co-chairs of the commission on their behalf and can now share the responses received.

PDA members had asked for more clarity around the scope and work of the Commission into pharmacy professional leadership before they could respond to the survey. However, the response came in too late to be shared, just a few hours before the midnight deadline for submissions.

In early September, we wrote to the UK’s Chief Pharmaceutical Officers to increase transparency and confidence in the process by asking for clarification of some of the commission’s thinking, assumptions, and scope. We believe it is important that the Commission’s work is informed by responses from pharmacists, but this must be based on a shared understanding. This is why we have been keen to provide all of our 35,000 members with the answers to those questions.

PDA at the Pharmacy Show 2022

Many PDA members attended the Pharmacy Show 2022 at the NEC, Birmingham this October and we had a significant presence on behalf of pharmacists.

We had speakers at seven of the theatre sessions at this year’s Pharmacy Show and supported the EPhEU stand promoting the Medicines to Ukraine campaign. Many PDA members were also among the thousands of event attendees visiting a wide range of stands, and hearing talks about practice, the sector, careers, wellbeing, and other associated topics as well as taking the opportunity to network with colleagues.

Audio recordings of all Pharmacy Show theatre sessions will be available in approximately 6 weeks and the PDA will share links to the sessions at which we had speakers. Next year’s Pharmacy Show is back at the NEC, Birmingham on Sunday 15, and Monday 16 October 2023 and we will share details about the event in due course.

Equality Trust report finds the gender pay gap won’t close for 48 years

According to the latest Equality Trust report, women won’t see the closure of the gender pay gap in the average FTSE 100 company for another 48 years.

The Equality Trust has released its latest briefing ‘Closing the gender pay gap: a review of the FTSE 100’s progress’. The report analysed FTSE 100 companies in terms of the progress made in closing the gender pay gap. As the government Equalities Office’s scheduled review of regulations hasn’t been published yet, this research assesses the progress made since the introduction of the regulations.

Based on the slow progress FTSE 100 companies have made to narrow the gender pay gap over the first three years, it’s been estimated it would take just under 48 years for the average FTSE 100 employer to close the gender pay gap. Read the full report here.

Hospital pharmacy, more than just dispensing medications

In our recent Member Voice specialist hospital pharmacist and PDA Regional Committee member, Amandip Kaur Souni discusses the pleasures and pressures of working in hospital pharmacy.

My journey to hospital pharmacy

Whilst I was at university, we used to visit the local hospital for work experience as part of our pharmacy practice module. During my visits here, I became familiar with the diverse role of a hospital pharmacist. It was fascinating to see how much involvement hospital pharmacists had in patients’ care.

PDA BAME Network launches Anti-Racist Pharmacy Toolkit

In July 2022, the PDA BAME Committee officially launched an Anti-Racist Pharmacy Toolkit. This was created using evidenced-based research to help empower members and pharmacists to address and redress inequality in their workplaces.

The toolkit is for active PDA Representatives, members, and other pharmacists. It is used to analyse workplaces and will help create a pharmacy sector that doesn’t just challenge racism but is actively anti-racist.

Pharmacy employers need to confirm contingency plans for potential power cuts

Pharmacists are beginning to ask employers what plans they have in the event of power cuts across the UK this winter.

This month, the National Grid warned that the UK will be more likely to experience power cuts this winter if Russia shuts off gas supplies while the UK experiences extra demand for heating and lighting due to adverse seasonal weather. Pharmacists are therefore considering what this may mean for patients, for the operation of a pharmacy, and for the safe and secure management of medicines.
