PDA declaration on the climate emergency

Like many other public, private and not-for-profit organisations across wider society and in the health sector, the PDA recognises the climate emergency and the importance of supporting a transition to a fully de-carbonised economy.

Thu 10th February 2022 The PDA

Climate change impacts all of us; pharmacists, our practice, our patients, our families, and our planet. Though the causes and solutions to this issue are not exclusively within the boundaries of pharmacy or of the workplace, the PDA believes it is the responsibility of every organisation and individual to play their part in recognising and taking effective action on the issue.

The sum of each local action, no matter how small, can add up to make a global difference. The National Executive Committee formally supported the declaration of a climate emergency at their meeting on Thursday 13 January.

The PDA supports achieving a cleaner environment, more affordable energy, smarter transport, new jobs, and an overall better quality of life for the world and these are the objectives of a green transition. In practical terms, the PDA is already committed to these principles and taking action to achieve them. The PDA:

  • Will continue to review and improve its own ways of working to become greener in how it operates.
  • Will support members to encourage pharmacy employers, and the wider sector, to review their ways of working and evolve all aspects of pharmacy practice to become climate neutral.
  • Does not need to divest from fossil fuel investments, because it does not have such investments in the first place.
  • Will support increased awareness and understanding of climate change within the profession.
  • Will work through trade union federations, and as part of civic society, to play an appropriate part in addressing the wider issue.

Members will be updated on progress in these areas over the coming months.
