PDA membership numbers grew by another 7% last year

PDA membership numbers are independently certified before being announced at each annual meeting and then formally reported. The PDA’s 2023 AGM was held on Thursday 29 June and attendees heard the latest certified membership numbers had once again reached record levels.

Newly announced membership figures for the year ending 31 March 2023 show PDA membership numbers are yet again at the highest-ever figure. At the year-end date, the pharmacist-only body had 36,806 members, having increased by a further 7% (an additional 2,296 members) since the same time last year.

The PDA provides membership data annually to the Certification Officer, the government body that regulates trade unions, and employer organisations. In addition, with more than 10,000 members, the PDA has an obligation to publish independently certified membership figures, and so these membership numbers are also externally audited before being reported.

PDA Director, Paul Day said, “We formally declare our membership numbers each year after they have been independently verified and we’re delighted to see nearly 2,300 extra members join us in the last twelve months. Though we now have a significant number of members, we’ve still got space for many more. Any pharmacy student, trainee pharmacist, and employed or locum pharmacist who has not yet joined, is encouraged to do so as soon as possible.

Joining the PDA is not just about the benefits and protections each member receives, with more pharmacists acting collectively as the PDA the profession in the UK gains a stronger voice nationally and internationally too. Our AGM is also a good time to remind pharmacists that they can reclaim tax against the cost of PDA membership.”

By working together as the PDA, members can help the voice of individual pharmacists be heard across the UK and beyond. Members can get involved in campaigns and networks, have an independent voice at work, and collectively challenge the dominance of employers and their representative organisations, governments, and others who impact upon patients and the profession.

PDA members can access PDA Education and many other member benefits, and call upon the PDA for support to protect their individual reputation and interests should they be involved in a dispute at work or need representation, and much more.

Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

The PDA is dedicated to equality, not just by publishing statements and information sharing, but also in the practical support provided every day to members who stand up to incidents of discrimination, including through grievances and tribunal cases.

The PDA now has almost 24,000 female members (c65% of the membership) which broadly reflects the profile of the profession and is working hard to ensure all aspects of diversity are appropriately reflected in PDA’s membership and activity. The PDA repeats its invitation to members to confidentially disclose diversity data about themselves to help achieve that objective.
