The General Federation of Trade Unions (GFTU) is the governing body of one of the UK’s Trade Union movements’ oldest federations.
One of the valuable attributes of the PDA’s status as an independent trade union is the connection its members can have with the wider trade union movement, enabling the activity of pharmacists to combine with other professions to improve rights and conditions at work for everyone. The PDA is affiliated with several trade union federations including the GFTU which is 122 years old.
The GFTU is governed by an Executive Committee consisting of representatives of affiliated unions and after each main election cycle, the membership of the Executive Committee is reviewed, and additional seats are made available to improve overall diversity. Aneesa has been elected to one of the seats reserved for young members.
Aneesa is a former PDA student and pre-reg representative. Aneesa, who is active in the PDA BAME Pharmacists’ Network and NAWP Network, said: “I joined the PDA as a pharmacy student and have seen for myself the value of their work for future pharmacists as well as those already practicing. Being active in the PDA gives all members the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge, and experience while making a positive difference for others. I recently passed my pre-reg exam having participated in PDA Education’s training courses and I had previously attended the GFTU Young Members development weekend. The development weekend furthered my interest in the value trade unions bring to the world of work, and to society. I am delighted to now be able to play more of a part in this work, on behalf of all PDA members.”
